Danny Chiyesu was born in Ndola (Copperbelt Province) in 1966 and discovered his ability to draw at the young age of 5. For his first attempts he used to draw on concrete floors and card board boxes using charcoal and enjoyed all art-related activities throughout school ranging from painting, molding with clay to making wire cars. After taking several arts and crafts classes in secondary school he enrolled at Evelyn Hone College in Lusaka and pursued a secondary art teaching degree studying art history, ceramics, sculpture and design.

Danny Chiyesu graduated in 1989 with a major in pictorial art and started teaching at his former school in Ndola in 1990. Apart from teaching he began working for SPEAKOUT magazine as a graphic artist and assistant editor while also enrolling at the Africa Literature Centre in Kitwe to advance his training in painting, graphic design, print-making and photography.

After almost ten years of being a teacher Danny Chiyesu quit his job and joined Mission Press, a printing and publishing company in Ndola, and has worked there ever since experimenting with computer painting software and starting his career in “Digital Art Painting”. Embracing new technology he exchanged his palette for a keyboard, the canvas for a screen and the brush for a computer mouse. The results of combining photography and computer skills have been overwhelming and are very unique in the Zambian art Scene.

Although he focuses on his digital art work he hasn’t abandoned traditional art materials like oil and acrylic paints, charcoal and pastels. He still paints and draws on cloth, paper and boards. Since 1988, Danny Chiyesu has participated in several local and international art exhibitions and took part in the EXPO 2000 in Hanover, Germany. He has sold his art work to both, local and foreign collectors and has been a member of the Zambia Visual Arts Council since 1992. Moreover, he is also the co-founder of the Cooperbelt Mukuba Art Trust and has registered his own art and graphic agency “Digital Majik” in 2006.
